Interdisciplinary Science Programs

Interdisciplinary Science plays a crucial role in Alexandria University (AU)due to their multifaceted benefits and contributions. It is regarded as vital for addressing the world’s challenges.

AU is committed to advancing interdisciplinary science and is dedicated to changing ways science is done to show excellence in interdisciplinary science, in terms of new programs that is designed to enhance career development, system thinking an Promoting Innovation and Creativity, and encouraging cooperation.

This is clear in the vision of the university, with activities starting in 1972. In this year, AU established a specialized institute for interdisciplinary science for postgraduates in conjunction with UNESCO and UNDP to encourage researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds to interact and work together . Since then, AUis developing new programs and projects to develop areas of interdisciplinarity according to scientific international standards. The Institute of Graduate Studies and Research (IGSR) structure includes 4 departments: Environmental sciences department, Material sciences, Biotechnology and Information technology departments. The institute is equipped with the most advanced equipment and specialised labs and has the following specialised interdisciplinary programs (https://igsr.alexu.edu.eg/index.php/en/ )

On the undergraduate level, the Faculty of Science established two interdisciplinary programs that were extended to include postgraduate. These are the Department of Oceanography in the mid-seventies, and the department of Environmental sciences in the mid-nineties. Both departments deliver interdisciplinary programs with high employability rates of their graduates.

Alexandria University is continually progressing in establishing new programs to cope with the advances in education and research (Table Below) . Recently AU established 27 programs on both the undergraduates and postgraduates levels. Of these programs, 10 programs are considered t be interdisciplinary in nature (Bold type in the table below).
